Welcome back to another episode of Woody Adjacent!
Todays movie up for discussion is one that seems to have fallen by the waste-side in terms of awareness.. which is extremely surprising given the cast on deck here giving all around good performances... what happened here?!? ...and why is the rotten tomatoes score so harsh on this one.. truly a head-scratcher to us :/
Well i guess we'll have to get into the.. DETAILS of this one.. heh heh XD
Thank yo so much for listening - As James stated near the end of todays discussion - if you would please consider supporting our teammate and friend Carly in this trying time we would really appreciate it

In The Details (2011) Tobey Maguire portrays Jeff, a seemingly content doctor living a comfortable suburban life with his wife Nealy (Elizabeth Banks). Their peaceful existence crumbles when a family of raccoons invades their backyard, digging up their meticulously landscaped lawn. Jeff's obsession with eradicating the pests escalates to absurd heights, leading him down a path of increasingly desperate and destructive measures.
Meanwhile, Nealy remains oblivious to Jeff's growing obsession, preoccupied with her own social circle and maintaining appearances. Their marriage becomes strained as communication breaks down and Jeff's behavior spirals.

We are BACK with a discussion for a movie that was put forward to us by our friends and supporters over from the woody allen subreddit - thanks for the recommendation guys :P
This feature.. for better or worst.. is a truly memorable experience that we had a very explorative conversation on.. yeah.. big words for a mammoth of an experience... so get ready to listen to us discuss
In Synecdoche, New York (2008) Written & Directed by Charlie Kaufman, ailing theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) struggles with a failing marriage, fading health, and the looming shadow of his successful ex-wife. Seeking an outlet for his anxieties and a deeper artistic expression, Caden embarks on a wildly ambitious project: constructing a life-sized replica of New York City within a warehouse. He populates this miniature world with actors tasked with living out their lives, blurring the line between reality and theatrical creation. As the project spirals outward, Caden confronts his mortality, the complexities of relationships, and the elusive search for meaning in a world that feels increasingly surreal.
As mentioned MANY times during this recording.. we really feel anyone who watches or who has watched this movie should really also check out "YourMovieSucksDOTorg" series of analysis videos on YouTube which really highlights some particularly creative minutiae and will probably increase your appreciation for this movie.. or maybe not - either way, check out the first episode here -

Woody Adjacent - Christopher Scott Cherot - Hav Plenty (1997)
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Today on Adjacent we, once again, delve back into the 90's for a much smaller release - centring on an all black cast, which.. for its time.. tells a bit more of a slice of life type story.
Rather than what black cinema was highlighting at the time... its sort of refershing to see this one rose to some minor acclain - and of course.. a Woody Allen resemblance can be seen.. which is why we are talking about this indie flick
t is kind of a daring wish for us to see this writer / director do another movie based on his life... he is talented.. so heres hoping! :P
In Hav Plenty (1997) Lee Plenty (played by Christopher Scott Cherot himself), a struggling and homeless writer, finds himself apartment-sitting for his wealthy friend Havilland Savage (Hav) while she's away visiting family. Lee jumps at the chance to see Hav, whom he's secretly loved for years. However, his dreams of romance get complicated upon his arrival. A series of unexpected encounters with various women unfolds, including Hav's recording-artist boyfriend, her best friend, and even her married sister. Lee's quest for love and career success takes him on a hilarious and awkward journey through the world of New York City's social circles.

Woody Adjacent - Julie Delpy, Chris Rock - Two Days In New York (2012)
Friday Aug 26, 2022
Friday Aug 26, 2022
On this episode of adjacent we have 2 returning actors from different projects we have already discussed before joinging forces in what some would call an unlikely alliance?
In particular, we highlight Julie Delpy as the writer and director of this release which was a very pleasant surprise
Certainly, an interesting pick for this months discussion! - so let's crack on and talk about: 2012's Two Days In New York
In "Two Days in New York," (2012) Julie Delpy reprises her role as Marion, a Parisian photographer now living in New York City with her young son from a previous relationship. She's happily settled with her new boyfriend, Mingus, a radio host played by Chris Rock. Their cozy life takes a hilarious turn when Marion's eccentric family – her father, sister, and her sister's outrageous boyfriend (who also happens to be Marion's ex) – descend upon them for a visit. The cultural clashes and unexpected drama that ensue test the couple's patience and force them to navigate "unwitting racism and sexual frankness" with all parties involved. Will their love survive the chaos of a two-day family invasion?

Woody Adjacent - Neil LaBute, Paul Rudd, Rachel Weisz - The Shape of Things (2003)
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
On this recording we are going to discuss a title with very familiar faces, adapted from an early 2000's play, touted about in London for a while - where the same actors themselves performed the material before transforming it to the big screen for this film!
Admittedly, not the most likeable story narrative.. but as always, it fostered a great conversation.. with lots to ponder
Sooooo lets dig into.... 2003's - The Shape of Things
You may have also noticed at the end of the discussion we spoke about the transition of our video content - if you have been following us on youtube via Planet Tyro we thank you for subscribing and hope you follow for the future video clips on Manic Expression - links will be shared on the next release
Nothing will change here for this podcast feed - only the video content
In "The Shape of Things," (2003) unassuming college student Adam (Paul Rudd) finds his life upended by a chance encounter with Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), a captivating art student. Drawn to his shyness, Evelyn begins a relationship with Adam, but on her terms. She encourages a dramatic physical and personality transformation, pushing him to become more confident, stylish, and assertive. His friends (played by Gretchen Mol and Fred Weller) become increasingly worried as Adam's transformation becomes extreme, questioning Evelyn's motives and the impact on their friend.

Woody Adjacent - Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei - Oscar (1991)
Thursday Jun 30, 2022
Thursday Jun 30, 2022
Back for another discussion for what we consider another hidden gem with an actor in the spotlight not usually going this route.. and surprisingly not falling flat on their chiseled face for taking this chance :P
In Oscar (1991) Sylvester Stallone ditches his usual action hero persona to play Angelo "Snaps" Provolone, a hardened New York mob boss. Facing a midlife crisis and haunted by his violent past, Snaps makes a life-changing decision: he vows to go straight and become an honest businessman. The film follows Snaps' hilarious and often disastrous attempts to navigate the legal world, all while dealing with a crooked accountant, a family life filled with comic dysfunction (including a daughter with questionable taste in boyfriends), and the constant pressure from his former associates. Marisa Tomei portrays Lisa, Snaps' sharp-tongued daughter, who provides a voice of reason (and exasperation) amidst the chaos.

Back for another film discussion.. and this time we are diving back into the realm of lesser known films for what some consider to be a hidden gem and others a complete waste of time... lets see what we think aye?
___________________________________________
In Julian Po (1997) Christian Slater portrays the title character, Julian, a depressed and directionless man who travels to a small, seemingly uneventful town.
Upon arrival, Julian rents a room at a boarding house. However, the townsfolk quickly become suspicious of him, initially viewing him as a potential criminal or con artist.
Things take an unexpected turn when Julian reveals possible suicidal intentions. Instead of the expected reaction, the townspeople become strangely fascinated and even sympathetic. They shower him with freebies and unsolicited advice, turning him into a local celebrity of sorts.
Enter Sarah (Robin Tunney), a beautiful and mysterious woman who claims she's been waiting her entire life for Julian. Her presence reignites a spark of life and hope within him, leading to a passionate connection, but hope may very well turn into tragedy as this small town runs wild with the celebrity and fanfare of their new visitor.

Well.. as you can see on this episode we are focusing on an Actor who has stolen the attention of hollywood and audiences alike with a surprising moment of arrogance and bad judgement
Yes, i have shamelessly taken this oppertunity to talk about the 2022 Oscar slap hear around the world... but ironically - Will Smith has a perfect movie in his filmography that fits nicely as a Woody Adjacent choice... believe it or not.. this is true!
In 1993's "Six Degrees of Separation," Will Smith portrays Paul, a charismatic young man who claims a connection to a famous actor and befriends a wealthy New York couple, Flan (Donald Sutherland) and Ouisa Kittredge (Stockard Channing). His charm and cultured demeanor quickly win them over, leading them to offer him a place to stay and support.
However, their newfound friendship takes an unexpected turn. As they delve deeper into Paul's background and experiences, questions arise about his true identity which leads to interesting revelations

Woody Adjacent - Kenneth Branagh, Jamie Dornan, Judi Dench - Belfast (2021)

Monday Mar 28, 2022
Back for another great discussion.. and thanks to James DW we are taking a turn for the more recent - focusing on another Woody alumni actor / director, deciding to do something much closer to home and his warm Irish heart
Apparently the Oscar folk just looove this one.. well, we assume so due to the wealthy academy nominations
Set in the late 1960s Belfast during the start of "The Troubles," Kenneth Branagh's 2021 film "Belfast" is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story. Told through the eyes of nine-year-old Buddy (Jude Hill), the film depicts the challenges a working-class Protestant family faces amidst escalating sectarian violence.
Buddy's world revolves around his loving parents (played by Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan), his feisty grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds), and his first crush at school. But their peaceful life is shattered as tensions rise between Protestant and Catholic communities.

We are back for another adjacent episode.. and this one in particular is a follow up episode ironically recorded 9 months after speaking about the previous 2 movies in this much beloved movie series.... Yes we are continuing the RICHARD LINKLATER BEFORE MOVIE SERIES
We purposefully separated this discussion from the other two films as it feels warranted in terms of story tone
Expectations for a movie can certainly lead to disappointment if you become particularly invested in the story and don't quite appreciate a tonal change..
This discussion touches on that and in all honesty it is probably more suited for the hardcore followers of this movie series
If you are one of the hardcore fans - please consider hearing us out in full before you tear us apart in the comments for our critical thoughts!

In Before Midnight (2013) we are reunited with Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) nine years after their emotional reunion in Paris (Before Sunset). This time, they find themselves in sun-drenched Greece, navigating the complexities of a long-term relationship with their children.
As they vacation with friends, their conversations reveal the strains of parenthood, career challenges, and the lingering weight of past decisions. Jesse, grappling with his writing career, feels overshadowed by Celine's success. Celine questions their dynamic and the sacrifices made for their family life.
Despite the bickering and frustrations, their undeniable connection remains. Intimate moments of shared laughter, vulnerability, and philosophical discussions remind them of the foundation of their relationship.
