On this recording we are going to discuss a title with very familiar faces, adapted from an early 2000's play, touted about in London for a while - where the same actors themselves performed the material before transforming it to the big screen for this film!

Admittedly, not the most likeable story narrative.. but as always, it fostered a great conversation.. with lots to ponder

Sooooo lets dig into....  2003's - The Shape of Things

Woody Adjacent - Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei - Oscar (1991)

June 30, 2022

Back for another discussion for what we consider another hidden gem with an actor in the spotlight not usually going this route.. and surprisingly not falling flat on their chiseled face for taking this chance :P

This time let's talk about 1991's - Oscar (no oscars were won for this feature! haha)

Woody Adjacent - Will Smith, Donald Sutherland - Six Degrees Of Separation (1993) The Oscar Slap Edition

April 28, 2022

Well.. as you can see on this episode we are focusing on an Actor who has stolen the attention of hollywood and audiences alike with a surprising moment of arrogance and bad judgement

Yes, i have shamelessly taken this oppertunity to talk about the 2022 Oscar slap hear around the world... but ironically - Will Smith has a perfect movie in his filmography that fits nicely as a Woody Adjacent choice... believe it or not.. this is true!

So, with that said, lets go back in time for:  1993's - Six Degrees of Separation

March 28, 2022

Back for another great discussion.. and thanks to James DW we are taking a turn for the more recent - focusing on another Woody alumni actor / director, deciding to do something much closer to home and his warm Irish heart

Apparently the Oscar folk just looove this one.. well, we assume so due to the wealthy academy nominations

So, with that said, lets go back in time for:  2021's - Belfast

Woody Adjacent - Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy - Before Midnight (2013)

February 26, 2022

We are back.. ironically 9 months after speaking about the previous 2 movies in this much beloved movie series.. and it's fair to say we purposefully separated this discussion from the other two as it feels warranted... if you feel like digging in the weeds of this movie / series

Expectations for a movie can certainly lead to dissapointment dangerous if you become invested in the story and don't quite appreciate a tonal change.. this discussion is probably more for the hardcore followers of this series..

If you are one of the hardcore fans - please consider hearing us out in full before you tear us apart in the comments for our critical thoughts :P

Woody Adjacent - Caveh zahedi - I Am A Sex Addict (2005)

January 24, 2022

Back on our first discussion for 2022 and this one is surely a doozie ;P

Upon re-listening / editing this session I think we may have rambled maybe a bit too much about our thoughts on the director himself and his motivations / methods in making this movie - but alas, eventually there is a review / discussion about this somewhat controversial dark biographical "comedy" of a film.. which we do have some appreciation for

December 23, 2021

We also wanted to announce that we have launched a PATREON campaign for those who are generous enough and able to contribute to our efforts financially.. now again, let me stress this - PLEASE ONLY CONTRIBUTE IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO - of course we as always appreciate those who just listen and share our content but any further support will be highly appreciated and put to good use in the further development of the podcast

Woody Adjacent - Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman & Ben Stiller - The Meyerowitz Stories (2017)

November 27, 2021

Welcome back everybody to another preposterous episode of Woody Allen  Adjacent!

Before we get to our movie pick for discussion James brought up an interesting blog piece regarding Wallace Shawn's defence of working with woody allen which can be read here

https://www.thewrap.com/wallace-shawn-woody-allen-still-willing-to-work/

It was also brought to our attention that a new woody allen blu ray release is out which.. is kind of meh in terms of the titles chosen but we are still glad to see Woodys back catalogue get any love in these tumultuous times!

https://www.amazon.com/The-Woody-Allen-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B09BTCKGM2?tag=bluray-039-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

ANYHOOO.. lets get back to the show with another pick by James - this time we are going to talk about

2017's - The Meyerowitz Stories

What a cast for this movie indeed! - i feel like this movie has honestly not been highlighted enough... and thats why it was a great pick for our playlist

As you can see, today we have quite the treat in store, as we are not just going to talk about one title but of course we just HAD to talk about its latest incarnation to make this conversation just that more RELEVANT

Ep 67: 2020 - Rifkins Festival *Discussion*

June 18, 2021

On this recording we are back to actually talk about a new Woody Allen movie release... yeah.. he's still at it :P - i know right haha

Also, we say a sincere farewell to our original co-host who start out with us on this journey: Simon Rad :(

Simon, who has decided (in a conversation off mic) to step away from podcasting in general will be missed for his Zany energy and pretty buck-wild moments - he will always be appreciated.. and may even pop in sometime in future...

but alas.. our good friend James Daniel Walsh now steps in full time to take on the role as co-host completely on this retrospective so the train will still chuggle along

Simon will be missed.. just a little bit (the damn bastard lol)

Anyhow.. lets get on with the show and talk about Woodys most latest release.. A film many are not finding to be in the higher tier of Woodys creative abilities but regardless we will, as always, give our honest opinion

Lets talk about..  2020's  -  Rifkins Festival

Woody Adjacent - Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy - Before Sunrise, Before Sunset (1995 & 2004)

May 25, 2021

We are back today to talk about our first movie series discussion for our Woody Allen Adjacent project!

This is a much beloved movie series that explores so many great aspects, mostly just through using dialogue - which may fly in the face of often advised filmaking - but this director had a vision

...and yes, rather strangely, we are leaving out the third piece of this puzzle for another time - but regardless, for now we just wanted to throw our hats off to this director and speak about the following two films

1995's - Before Sunrise and 2004's - Before Sunset

We could have honestly spoke about these movies even more (specifically the second one) but alas we must press on..

Anyhow.....

Ep 66: 2021 - Allen v Farrow v Half Truths

April 17, 2021

On todays record we give our thoughts on the Allen V Farrow Docu-Series

This will of course be a very contentious topic of debate given the subject matter  at hand.. add to that the fact your hosts on the episode believe Woody Allen is innocent which seems to be against the grain of the current public emotional opinion

Again we implore people who have watched this docuseries to hear from the other side and the links below can adhere to that

Woody Adjacent - Louis CK, Chloe Grace Moretz - I Love You, Daddy (2017)

October 28, 2020

As part of the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast we now move into our next phase of the project that i have been planning for well over a year now.

Woody has completed his 50 movie run and still running strong but in the meantime there are a WHOLE lot of films that imitate, pay homage and remind of us of Woodys filmography and we want to now discuss them as we feel these conversations can be relivant to this project and even shine a lighgt on some great movies... and also some questionable ones I personally think there is alot to be had pursuing this new angle and i am more than excited to do this with a new co-host to add to the conversation....

You have certainly heard him before on some of our more recent Wood Discussions - Author, Content Creator and founder of popular community website Manic Expression, James Daniel Walsh will be joining me on these discussions ....and we begin our new venture with Louis CK's Disastrous shelved Film

2017's  -  I Love You, Daddy

Ep 65: 2020 - Apropos of Nothing Memoir *Discussion*

June 22, 2020

As promised we are BACK again with more Woody Allen content, this time having a thoughtful discussion focusing on Woodys recently released memoir: Apropos of Nothing (2020)

We are joined here once again by James Walsh, Author, Content Creator and founder of popular community website Manic Expression - http://www.manic-expression.com

It's quite possible you've heard us talk about Woody a few years ago, contemplating his 'final chapter' ...and since then, Soooo much has happened to the filmmaker

This conversation could also be considered a general catchup on Woodys life / career up to the time of this recording. Personally, I (Don Wunder) really enjoyed putting this one together.. and if you stay tuned to the end you might even hear some very exciting news about the future of this project ;)

Thanks for listening and supporting us folks!

Ep 64: 2019 - A Rainy Day In New York *Discussion*

June 3, 2020

After a long hiatus.. we finally get to have this discussion about the extremely elusive and somewhat controversial release by Woody Allen in the midst of this ongoing global PANDEMIC and so much behind the scenes crap you guys probably don't wanna hear about.. this show must go on.. so at long last.. let's discuss

2019's - A Rainy Day In New York

....a movie we even have a hard time pinning a release date on since it had such a staggered kind of distribution. Anyway, this recording is just a little bit more relaxed and curt as firstly.. we didn't have the best experience with this one.. we had a few drinks before the recording.. and honestly we were just not as excited to pull out all the stops for this discussion so we apologise if its not exactly the review you were waiting for

The guest we have on here is also pretty useless lol but hey he wouldn't shut up so we gave him a mic too :P Okay so following from this recording we do have 2 other discussions coming up focusing on Woodys Autobiography (which is excellent btw) and then maybe later down the year we can start the Woody-Like project I've hinted at... hmm.. we'll see.. anyway - thanks for your patience, we really appreciate the people who enjoy the podcast for what it IS and not what they think it SHOULD be ;)

For those of you who follow the podcast and like myself want to continue the conversation about great movies like what Woody has produced i wanted to let you guys know i am doing a hunt for great movies that follow in the footsteps of Woody Allen and i want your help and recommendations

I recently made a post in the woody allen subreddit about this and i got some good feedback - i want you guys to check out that post for clarification

This is something i, Don Wunder will be working on in the background up til the end of the year for a 2020 launch. Let me know what you think. your recommendations and the like

This is an experiment and i'm not exactly expecting much feedback in the long run but i'd thought i'd throw this out there and see if there are any takers

Ep 62: TOP TEN WOODY ALLEN MOVIES + HONORS

September 24, 2018

fter completing a FULL conversational retrospective on Woody Allen's entire filmography.. arguing about which films were our personal favourites and debating the variables for our final video...

in this phase of the retrospective we thought we would do a bit more of a GENERIC top 10 favourites list to cash in on all the SEO potential (lol) no, really, this will probably be more accessible to those wondering what we consider the best of the best... nd it has been one hell of a ride getting to this point

REMINDER - You can, of course, find a full playlist of every Woody discussion we have ever had in the following link if you want to go in even more depth on what we skim over in this video https://goo.gl/iIshSK

Ep 61: Woody Allen’s Best / Worst / Underrated *Discussion*

September 17, 2018

After our 2 year long project of watching EVERY Woody Allen live action production we could find up to March 2018. Your esteemed hosts decided to battle it out and have a long running conversation debating each others picks on the BEST, WORST & MOST UNDERRATED picks from Woody's filmography

We also had some good banter about our thoughts on the movies individually and if things have changed since our earlier recordings

We will be following up from this discussion with a more generic WOODY ALLEN TOP 10 channel video in a few weeks just to make things alot shorter for curious casuals...

So this discussion was actually quite useful for us to make the final list that is soon to come!

We want to take this time to thank everyone for watching, listening and following along, whether you just round our retrospective or have been following along since the inception.

Your support and feedback has meant alot ...and boy are we FINALLY glad we have caught up and got all this out of our system!

Ep 60: 2017 - Wonder Wheel *Discussion*

September 11, 2018

At this point in our retrospective we have finally caught up with Woody's movie releases and so that brings us to this romantic-drama set on the beautiful boardwalk of Coney Island...

let's talk about 2017's - WONDER WHEEL

....even though this is the last in our current review discussions, you may very well want to hang around as our hosts have got some perspective after all these reviews and want to put those thoughts in some final wrap up recordings to end this part of the project STAY TUNED ;)

Ep 59: 2016 - Crisis In Six Scenes *Discussion*

September 3, 2018

At this point in Woody Allen's career he is making films with online streaming giant Amazon Studios and since they know him to be such an accomplished director they asked him to put on a new hat as a television series director to bolister their lineup of exclusive television shows

...So, on this discussion we debate the results of said project... hoping for the best of results but coming away... not so positive :(

At this point in Woody's career he is making films for Amazon Studios and since they know him to be such an accomplished director they asked him to put on a new hat as a television series director and were hoping for good results..

....ANND just in case people think we are HATING on this out of nowhere with no sense of open critizism - why don't you read Woody's own thoughts on the project in the link we will share with you below (yes we know Woody always talks smack about his own work)

Ep 55: 2013 - Fading Gigolo *Discussion*

August 8, 2018

Back again with another sidestep from the focused retrospective to follow Woody on yet another one of his outside collaborations, this time being with an exceptionally well known character actor (John Turturro) in a very strange and sexy* type of character piece???

This was certainly a strange one to say the very least... but always fun to have a conversation about :)

Ep 54: 2013 - Blue Jasmine / Dylan Farrow Interview Talk *Discussion*

August 3, 2018

Back again with a Woody episode many have waited for us to get around to - apparently this is another standout character piece that although uncomfortable to sit through... it's hard not to admire what's on display here....but sadly we have to inject a bit of reality in this episode as well

At the time of this actual recording Dylan Farrow had come out to do a in person interview for the first time to AGAIN continue the accusation of Woody and sexual assault in the midst of the #metoo / #timesup movement - as well as all the current crop of past actors now denouncing Woody Allen

Because we decided to tackle all this in this episode it obviously got extended to near an hour so we want to thank those who stick it all the way through to the end and hear us give our HONEST OPINIONS So, although a bit late on the news curb, let's talk about.....

July 31, 2018

BACK on the retrospective with another European Journey for Mr Allen Memory serves as this one not being very good with critical feedback BUT our recent re-watch has given us some new perspective

.......ALSO it seems Woody collaborated on another movie around this time with very middling results

Ep 52: 2012 - American Masters - A Woody Allen Documentary *Discussion*

July 27, 2018

Back on the retrospective with a little side step discussion....

Robert Weide has proven to be a positive proponent and admirer of Woody Allen over the years, in fact more recently, he was the fellow that had him on for a facebook live interview as hard to believe as that might sound

As such, back in 2012 he puts his documentarian hat on and completed a pretty thorough exploration on Woody's entire life and career up to this point  ...and honestly, its probably one of the best celebrity documentaries we have ever seen thus far!

Ep 39: 2000 - Picking Up The Pieces *Discussion*

June 16, 2018

Back on the retrospective with one of the most bizarre movies Woody has had his hands mixed up in!

Admittedly, there is some big hitters here regarding the actual cast but  with such a ramdp, comedy romp script, you might have thought this was something that was made in the 70's or something

Alas.. the few that have seen this claim its definitely a mixed bag.. to say the very least.. meaning this is gonna be one hell of a discussion :P

Who the hell actually directed this movie anyway - does this director actually exist... lol
