Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent here on the Retrospective Podcast!
Today we are talking about another movie from the 90's.. a very very small movie with a hugely celebrated actor..
We have some fun suggestions on what Woody Allen Movies he could have done well in since his actual planned movie role with Woody Fell through in the mid 2000's which was quite unfortunate
This movie is a really great showcase of his talents though that many people seemed to have missed or snubbed :P
So with that said.. lets talk about 1997's - Two Girls And A Guy

Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent!
We want to give a massive thank you to one of our wonderful listeners: PAUL STICKNEY who recommended we give the works of Edward Burns a look as a good match for future adjacent talks!
Edward Burns seems to be most celebrated for his first directorial movie: The Brothers McMullen but before we get to that one i thought lets take a side step and actually check up his follow up movie with a really cool cast
In "She's The One" (1996) Mickey Fitzpatrick (Edward Burns), a heartbroken cab driver recently dumped by his fiancée Heather seeks solace in a whirlwind marriage to the impulsive artist Hope (Maxine Bahns). Meanwhile, Mickey's seemingly perfect brother Francis (Mike McGlone) harbors a secret affair one Heather, adding another layer of complication. As Mickey navigates his unconventional marriage and Francis wrestles with guilt, the past resurfaces – with hints that Heather may not be exactly who she seems.
Thank you so much for listening - We are still hopeful in asking that you would please consider supporting our colleague and friend Carly in this trying time as she deals with medical treatment and could really use your support - please check out her Go Fund Me campaign below

Woody Adjacent - Steve Martin, Sarah Jessica Parker - L.A. Story (1991)
Monday Feb 27, 2023
Monday Feb 27, 2023
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent!
This month we are talking about one of the worlds most celebrated comedic actors who has some really interesting parallels to Woody Allen - this movie in particular seems to be a jokey-poke love letter to a city very close to his heart that, of course, we have a good ol' conversation about
In L.A. Story (1991) Harris K. Telemacher (Steve Martin) trudges through his life as a bored weatherman in Los Angeles. His job feels unfulfilling, his relationship with his materialistic girlfriend Trudi (Marilu Henner) is stagnant, and the city's superficiality grates on him.
One night, a chance encounter with a talking freeway billboard (voiced by Rebecca De Mornay) throws his world upside down. The billboard becomes Harris' unlikely confidante, offering him witty advice and nudging him towards a more fulfilling life.
As Harris seeks love and meaning, he crosses paths with two compelling women: Sara (Victoria Tennant), a sharp-witted British journalist researching L.A. culture, and SanDee (Sarah Jessica Parker), a ditzy aspiring model with an unusual way of spelling her name ("Sandy" in the credits).
Through hilarious mishaps and surreal encounters (think exploding sushi and a conga line of celebrities), Harris embarks on a journey of self-discovery. He grapples with finding authentic connections in the shallow world of L.A., and the film playfully satirizes the city's quirks and obsessions.

Woody Adjacent - Zoe Kazan & Paul Dano - Ruby Sparks (2012)

Friday Jan 27, 2023
Wishing everybody a very happy new year 2023 to all our humble listeners / wonderful subscribers!
Woody Allen Adjacent is back for another year of great debate and discussion while we await another official woody release - starting the year off with a somewhat fantasy / slice of life romantic drama.. where we had to ask ourselves.. can ONE scene determine the flow of an entire movie? o_0
In Ruby Sparks (2012) Paul Dano portrays Calvin Weir-Fields, a once-celebrated novelist suffering from crippling writer's block. Frustrated and desperate, he resorts to an unorthodox method: writing a character named Ruby Sparks (played by Zoe Kazan) and detailing her personality, appearance, and even her quirks.
To his astonishment, Ruby inexplicably comes to life the next morning, stepping out of the pages of his manuscript and into his world. Calvin is initially overjoyed, finding himself in a whirlwind romance with his dream woman. However, as their relationship progresses, things start to change...

Woody Adjacent - Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan - When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Sunday Dec 25, 2022
Seasons Greetings All!
We are still recovering from the jolliest of seasons.. and that horrible trip we shared with Alex on our last discussion >_<
But today we are going to talk about one of the most celebrated Romantic Comedy's of all time.. right up there with Anne Hall in our humble opinion
I called it low hanging fruit for a discussion.. that doesn't mean the fruit itself is not oozing with all the flavours needed for a great conversation!
In the iconic romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally" (1989), Billy Crystal portrays Harry Burns, a cynical writer firmly believing men and women can't truly be friends due to the "sex thing" always getting in the way. Meg Ryan plays Sally Albright, a quick-witted journalist who fiercely disagrees. Their paths first cross as recent college graduates sharing a bumpy car ride from Chicago to New York, where their opposing views ignite a spirited debate.
Years pass, and fate throws them together again at various points in their lives. Through chance encounters, both find themselves in relationships while still drawn to each other's sharp wit and intellectual connection. Along with their best friends (Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby), they navigate the complexities of modern dating, heartbreak, and the ever-present tension between Harry's skepticism and Sally's longing for genuine connection. As the years unfold, their arguments and banter become laced with a growing emotional vulnerability.

Woody Adjacent - Donald Sutherland & Ellen Burstyn - Alex In Wonderland (1970)

Tuesday Dec 13, 2022
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Adjacent - Tis the season to be jolly and give you a DOUBLE release this month
Todays movie up for discussion was actually another request put forward to us by our friends at the Woody Allen Subreddit
It was quite the experience.. lol - i hope you can appreciate the conversation.. even if we get some coal in our stockings for our thoughts :P
In Alex In Wonderland (1970) Donald Sutherland portrays Alex Morrison, a successful film director fresh off the critical and artistic acclaim of his first feature film, Alex finds himself facing a daunting task – choosing his next project. Anxiety and self-doubt cloud his vision, leaving him creatively paralysed.
Alex's internal struggle manifests in a series of fantastical scenarios heavily influenced by his cinematic idols. He envisions directing grand historical epics, biopics of controversial figures, and even black power films. These internal fantasies intertwine with his real-life encounters with Hollywood producers, casting directors, and fellow artists like Federico Fellini, creating a blurry line between dreams and reality.

Welcome back to another episode of Woody Adjacent!
Todays movie up for discussion is one that seems to have fallen by the waste-side in terms of awareness.. which is extremely surprising given the cast on deck here giving all around good performances... what happened here?!? ...and why is the rotten tomatoes score so harsh on this one.. truly a head-scratcher to us :/
Well i guess we'll have to get into the.. DETAILS of this one.. heh heh XD
Thank yo so much for listening - As James stated near the end of todays discussion - if you would please consider supporting our teammate and friend Carly in this trying time we would really appreciate it

In The Details (2011) Tobey Maguire portrays Jeff, a seemingly content doctor living a comfortable suburban life with his wife Nealy (Elizabeth Banks). Their peaceful existence crumbles when a family of raccoons invades their backyard, digging up their meticulously landscaped lawn. Jeff's obsession with eradicating the pests escalates to absurd heights, leading him down a path of increasingly desperate and destructive measures.
Meanwhile, Nealy remains oblivious to Jeff's growing obsession, preoccupied with her own social circle and maintaining appearances. Their marriage becomes strained as communication breaks down and Jeff's behavior spirals.

We are BACK with a discussion for a movie that was put forward to us by our friends and supporters over from the woody allen subreddit - thanks for the recommendation guys :P
This feature.. for better or worst.. is a truly memorable experience that we had a very explorative conversation on.. yeah.. big words for a mammoth of an experience... so get ready to listen to us discuss
In Synecdoche, New York (2008) Written & Directed by Charlie Kaufman, ailing theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) struggles with a failing marriage, fading health, and the looming shadow of his successful ex-wife. Seeking an outlet for his anxieties and a deeper artistic expression, Caden embarks on a wildly ambitious project: constructing a life-sized replica of New York City within a warehouse. He populates this miniature world with actors tasked with living out their lives, blurring the line between reality and theatrical creation. As the project spirals outward, Caden confronts his mortality, the complexities of relationships, and the elusive search for meaning in a world that feels increasingly surreal.
As mentioned MANY times during this recording.. we really feel anyone who watches or who has watched this movie should really also check out "YourMovieSucksDOTorg" series of analysis videos on YouTube which really highlights some particularly creative minutiae and will probably increase your appreciation for this movie.. or maybe not - either way, check out the first episode here -

Woody Adjacent - Christopher Scott Cherot - Hav Plenty (1997)
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Today on Adjacent we, once again, delve back into the 90's for a much smaller release - centring on an all black cast, which.. for its time.. tells a bit more of a slice of life type story.
Rather than what black cinema was highlighting at the time... its sort of refershing to see this one rose to some minor acclain - and of course.. a Woody Allen resemblance can be seen.. which is why we are talking about this indie flick
t is kind of a daring wish for us to see this writer / director do another movie based on his life... he is talented.. so heres hoping! :P
In Hav Plenty (1997) Lee Plenty (played by Christopher Scott Cherot himself), a struggling and homeless writer, finds himself apartment-sitting for his wealthy friend Havilland Savage (Hav) while she's away visiting family. Lee jumps at the chance to see Hav, whom he's secretly loved for years. However, his dreams of romance get complicated upon his arrival. A series of unexpected encounters with various women unfolds, including Hav's recording-artist boyfriend, her best friend, and even her married sister. Lee's quest for love and career success takes him on a hilarious and awkward journey through the world of New York City's social circles.

Woody Adjacent - Julie Delpy, Chris Rock - Two Days In New York (2012)
Friday Aug 26, 2022
Friday Aug 26, 2022
On this episode of adjacent we have 2 returning actors from different projects we have already discussed before joinging forces in what some would call an unlikely alliance?
In particular, we highlight Julie Delpy as the writer and director of this release which was a very pleasant surprise
Certainly, an interesting pick for this months discussion! - so let's crack on and talk about: 2012's Two Days In New York
In "Two Days in New York," (2012) Julie Delpy reprises her role as Marion, a Parisian photographer now living in New York City with her young son from a previous relationship. She's happily settled with her new boyfriend, Mingus, a radio host played by Chris Rock. Their cozy life takes a hilarious turn when Marion's eccentric family – her father, sister, and her sister's outrageous boyfriend (who also happens to be Marion's ex) – descend upon them for a visit. The cultural clashes and unexpected drama that ensue test the couple's patience and force them to navigate "unwitting racism and sexual frankness" with all parties involved. Will their love survive the chaos of a two-day family invasion?
